What’s an OLPF? Why Is It Needed? and Why Did Blackmagic Add It to Their Cameras?

In this short video we try to answer the questions of what is an OLPF, why is it needed, and why did Blackmagic add it to their higher end Digital Film Cameras. In order to demonstrate why this might be a desirable addition, James Mathers, with the help of Director/DP Jody Eldred, shot comparison tests on a Virtual Production stage at Sam Nicholson, ASC’s Stargate Studios. Shooting with two identical Blackmagic URSA 12K cameras, with and without an OLPF installed, the camera lacking the OLPF showed significant issues with moire. While at Stargate Studios, we also shot an interview with Sam, a preeminent authority on the subject of Virtual Production.

Also included in this video is a short interview with Suny Behar, who serves as Director and Co-EP on the HBO Camera Assessment Series. Having tested most of the popular cinema cameras including the Blackmagic URSA 12K, he has long advocated to Blackmagic that they include this problem solving filter in their camera design.
