DJI DroneThe Federal Aviation Administration has announced the requirement that Owners of many small UAVs, (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), or drones will have to register them with the government. This in response to increasing reports of drones flying near manned aircraft and airports.  The requirement will cover aircraft weighing from a half pound up to 55 pounds.

Owners who are 13 and older will have to register, (with parents of younger children expected to register for their kids), on an FAA website that’s available starting Dec. 21.  Current Owners must complete registration by February 19, and all subsequent purchasers will need to register before their first flight.  Such aircraft will then be required to be marked with a unique identification number.  Registration will cost $5, but the fee will be waived for the first 30 days.
