This half-hour radio feature on the history and current resurgence of the VistaVision format is a good listen. It features interviews with two DPs currently up for Best Cinematography Oscars, Robbie Ryan, BSC/ISC for Bugonia and Michael Bauman for One Battle After Another, as well as last year’s Best Cinematography Oscar Winner, The Brutalist, Lol Crowley, BSC. Also featured is Bugonia Director Yorgos Lanthimos, Paramount Pictures Director, Film Preservation & Restoration, Charlotte Barker, who is writing a book on the format, and Actor/Cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi, who is now an owner of a VistaVision camera. Also interviewed are VFX pioneers John Dykstra and Dennis Muren.
In discussions with NPR reporter Mandalit del Barco they point out some of the challenges, (noisy, bulky, and mechanically finicky,) as well as the huge aesthetic benefits that make it all worthwhile. Special thanks to Mitch Gross, who pointed out this episode as a post on CML. You can listen online here: https://www.npr.org/2026/02/22/nx-s1-5721167/vistavision-hollywood-comeback-oscars
