DCS Mourns The Loss of Legendary Cinematographer Victor Kemper, ASC

From The Last Tycoon to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure with over 50 other notable features including Dog Day Afternoon, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, National Lampoon’s Vacation, The Candidate, Beethoven, Tommy Boy, Eyes of Laura Mars, The Jerk, Slap Shot, and many more, Victor J. Kemper, ASC had a long and amazing career. After having been retired for many years, he passed away on November 27th at his Los Angeles area home at the age of 96.

Besides his many feature films, Kemper also had notable TV credits and was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the 1987 CBS telefilm Kojak: The Price of Justice and shot the CBS miniseries The Atlanta Child Murders. He also found the time to serve as president of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1993-96 and 1999-2001.  He received the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 and served as the Cinematographer-in-Residence at UCLA in 2008.
