Cooke Optics has introduced the much-anticipated 18mm focal length to the SP3 T2.4 set they introduced last year. The new 18mm joins the 25mm, 32mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm, mirroring those lenses in T-Stop range (T2.4-16), full frame coverage, focus and iris ring placement, and versatile mount options, including Sony E, Canon RF, Leica M, and L mount. The 18mm offers a close focus of 0.25m, compared to the second widest lens in the set being 1.4m. Along with close focus improvement, the maximum diagonal angle of view for Full Frame as well as Super 35 formats have been increased (to 99 degrees and 82 degrees respectively).
Physically, the 18mm and the 100mm are a bit larger than the rest of the set weighing in about a pound heavier and a third of an inch longer, (which also requires a larger front element that takes 77mm filters instead of the 58mm filter threads seen on the rest of the set.) Those very minor differences aside, all six lenses are still very light and compact. These lenses are built for use with mirrorless cameras and compact cinema cameras, often mounted on a gimbal or drone. They’re especially useful for solo operators and small crew scenarios where delicate, cumbersome full-sized cinema primes such as the Panchros might prove difficult to manage. The 18mm T2.4 SP3 is priced at $4,970US, while the full six lens pack with the new 18mm supplied in a robust hard-shell carry case has an MSRP of $26,000US.
