Canon has announced three new hybrid RF lenses coming out before the end of 2024. They include the RF24mm F1.4 L VCM, the RF50mm F1.4 L VCM, and the RF70-200 F2.8 L IS USM Z. The “hybrid” designation suggests that these lenses are designed to handle the demands of both still photography and video capture. They have similar weights, lengths, and controls for seamless swaps between their counterparts in the same “Z” or “VCM” lines. They also offer fast focusing for stills, smooth video transitions, a programmable function button, and a de-clicked iris ring important for motion capture. Also with video capture in mind, the “Nano USM,” (Ultrasonic Motor,) offers more precise near-silent lens auto-focus operation which can quickly be switched to a dedicated manual iris ring for heightened focus control and adjustments. The two prime lenses are both compact (less than 4 inches in length) and lightweight (at only about 20 ounces each,) features that should make them appealing to gimbal users. They have the L-series-level durability and weather resistance to handle harsh weather conditions.
The Canon RF70-200 F2.8 L IS USM Z is a zoom in the classic focal range of 70-200mm which is available in either black or white finish. This lens follows a similar hybrid design strategy as the new primes with lockable iris ring, two customizable lens function buttons, and an additional customizable control ring. It also incorporates some external features of the RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z and is compatible with its extenders and power zoom adapters. This new zoom features internal zoom and focus mechanisms which make for consistent balance when shooting with a gimbal, drone, or car mount. The three lenses are available for preorder now at US$1,499 for the RF24mm F1.4 L VCM, US$1,399 for the RF50mm F1.4 L VCM, and US$2,999 for the RF70-200 F2.8 L IS USM Z.
