The Blackmagic Design URSA Cine 12K LF has been tested to meet the strict quality standards for resolution, dynamic range and color accuracy to become a Netflix approved camera. Officially titled “Cameras and Image Capture: Requirements and Best Practices,” the list highlights the capture requirements necessary to be qualified as an approved camera. This is important because Netflix requires 90% of a program’s final total runtime to be captured on approved cameras. The list of approved systems already includes the Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 and the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF.
This camera features a new large format RGBW 36 x 24mm image sensor with larger photo-sites for increased dynamic range. The sensor uses a symmetrical RGBW design for better scaling without aliasing and the full sensor area gives customers an optional 3:2 open gate image area allowing extensive reframe in post production and the ability to use the large sensor area to shoot anamorphic and deliver in a range of aspect ratios with 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.66, 1.8 and 2x de-squeeze factors. The camera can shoot in 4K, 8K or 12K using the entire sensor without cropping, and there are even 9K Super 35 4-perf, 3-perf and 2-perf modes for full compatibility with classic cinema lenses.
Other new features include an 8K SSD “Media Module” along with a new dock for ingest and back up, (with 16TB coming in the future). It has built-in wireless abilities and an additional touch screen monitor on what was formerly called the “dumb side” with lots of control and focus assist features for the AC.
The camera has interchangeable PL, LPL and EF lens mounts and is available now at an MSRP of $6,995. For more details on the camera visit: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20240412-01

Additionally, a new version is being offered as an option. The Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K LF Body is now offered as a stand-alone purchase that has all the quality and features of the URSA Cine 12K but excludes many of the accessories. This body only model is designed for users, such as rental houses who already have the accessories they need to rig their cameras. This also makes it more affordable with the URSA Cine 12K LF Body retailing for only US$6,995.
The camera itself is a fully featured model without any limitations in quality or performance, but it excludes accessories such as shoulder mounts, handles, some lens mounts, battery plates, power supply, lenses and the high capacity 8TB media module. You can purchase these items separately as needed to complete the total camera rig desired.
For media, while the 8TB media module is not in this model, there is a new CFexpress media module included that has dual CFexpress card slots. The Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K LF Body model has an EF lens mount installed as standard. Other lens mounts can be purchased independently as required.
