Blackmagic Design has announced that they have started to ship their new URSA Cine 12K Camera featuring a full frame 36 x 24mm sensor, which claims up to 16 stops of dynamic range. The sensor uses a symmetrical RGBW design for better scaling without aliasing and the full sensor area gives customers an optional 3:2 open gate image area allowing extensive reframe in post production and the ability to use the large sensor area to shoot anamorphic and deliver in a range of aspect ratios with 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.66, 1.8 and 2x de-squeeze factors. The camera can shoot in 4K, 8K or 12K using the entire sensor without cropping, and there are even 9K Super 35 4-perf, 3-perf and 2-perf modes for full compatibility with classic cinema lenses.
Other new features include an 8K SSD “Media Module” along with a new dock for ingest and back up, (with 16TB coming in the future). It has built-in wireless abilities and an additional touch screen monitor on what was formerly called the “dumb side” with lots of control and focus assist features for the AC.
The camera has interchangeable PL, LPL and EF lens mounts and is available now at an MSRP of $14,995. For more details on the camera visit: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20240412-01
The launch is supported by a beautiful wide screen demo of a high contrast flamenco dancing scene shot by Christian Sebaldt, ASC, (who we are proud to say is also a longtime DCS member.) https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicursacine/gallery

I’ve been a Sony cam user for 10 years, but it’s so exciting to see what BM continues to do with camera technology! Why does BM not allow compatibility with Sony lenses?
So grateful for DCS.
