ARRI is not usually the first to enter a new product line, but oftentimes they turn out to be the best. That might very well be true for Omnibar, their latest lighting instrument introduction. Omnibar is a compact, modular, battery-powered IP65 LED light-bar with precise pixel control. I got the chance to play with it a bit at a pre-NAB press briefing, but was not allowed to report about it until now. ARRI likely held the release so that it wouldn’t be overshadowed by news of the acquisition of the company by Thomas Riedel. Nevertheless, this new light is worth bragging about. Of course, it is full spectrum, with precision control, (on the unit, wired DMX, or wirelessly via the integrated TimoTwo CRMX chip,) and being ARRI, it is built solid. It is perhaps a little heavier than the competition, but the rigidity it provides is worth it for the options opened up in terms of modularity, interchangeable optics, and the ability to add light modifiers. It is also IP65 rated for weather protection and reliable indoor and outdoor use.
Omnibar is offered in two-foot and four-foot form factors, but the modular design also supports building longer bars up to 12 feet in length which can be connected in a single daisy-chain, with a total of up to 24 feet of bars supported across two or more daisy-chains. This range allows applications—from a single internal battery powered unit to a studio using dozens of units with the Omnibase hub providing a single power and data source, reducing setup times and simplifying cable needs.
Magnetically fixed, easily interchangeable optics include a Round Diffuser for soft, tube-like ambient light; a Flat Diffuser for controlled, bar-like output suited to in-camera effects and live events and an Intensifier to boost brightness and focus for high-output applications. Omnibar can also be used open-face for maximum brightness when bouncing light, integrating into set design, or using a softbox.
The ARRI Omnibar is available now and ready to ship as single sets or as multi-unit transport sets that include essential accessories and tools, as well as a streamlined Creator Set with core accessories for individual creators and small crews.
