Reviewers were not too enthusiastic about Apple’s release of the iPhone 17 if they were just considering the incremental improvements as a phone. They noted a little bigger screen, a little longer battery life, and a little faster processor. However, filmmakers have a lot more to be excited about with the new capabilities of the iPhone as a motion picture capture device. Apple has introduced ProRes RAW and open gate recording support for iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Meanwhile Blackmagic Design has announced that DaVinci Resolve 20.2 and Blackmagic Camera 9.8 public beta will add support for Apple ProRes RAW, including footage captured with the new iPhones. In addition, future updates for Blackmagic Camera and Blackmagic Video Assist 12G will add ProRes RAW recording file formats.
DaVinci Resolve 20.2 and Blackmagic Camera 9.8 public beta are available now free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website.
